Whatever the methodology, method, departure point, point of view, prodrome or incipit, it is becoming more and more evident that the participatory approach not only concerns planning practice but concerns even more the body of the discipline. Knowledge and organization of the physical (and non-) space find expression in the 'network' metaphor and, therefore, in adaptability, inter-ex-changeability and metamorphosis.
The counterbalancing, overlapping and juxtaposing of individual/private space with collective/common/public/shared space is the subject of analysis and of the project. The concept that seems to emerge is the coexistence of diversity and resilience. Which are opposites and indispensable for the description of places and space. But diversity and resilience only confront each other in the space of exchange, hybridisation and metamorphosis. Diver s city is intended as a place for exchanging, for the hydbridisation and metamorphosis of the various kinds of knowledge which are involved in the city, being the principal place where human beings create, construct, transform and destroy relations between themselves and space. A place that does not offer homologation but an officina (workshop), open, therefore, to cooperative processes; there are no univocal relations and the trap of ludification of processes and knowledge is avoided. So the “semi-lattice” Christopher Alexander wrote of in 1969 is created a transversal and undirected relationship between kinds of knowledge, somewhat reminiscent of the Bauhaus study plan designed in 1928 by Hannes Meyer. Diver s city is the officina where you can build relationships and knowledge networks whoever takes part will consequently deal with project organization in all its aspects. Project organization as a page on which to comment, discuss, build and decide: in other words, the basis of the project but also a departure point for redefining it. Each kind of knowledge will not just create a piece of a universal puzzle which, once put together, will provide a reference map for planning and town planning, but more a domino effect, with new possible routes being mapped out each time by the different combinations. |

Who has wholesome counsel to declare unto the state? |
In Diver s City research originates on one side from needs expressed and starts off with student collaboration, while on the other it aims at creating, through exploration, shared research adventures, on an international level in particular. Two research projects are under way at the moment, one created for and with students of the planning degree course: 10 questions for a planner, while collaboration with various research centres has PA genome, under John Dickey, professor at |
